Welcome to M.E. Truckenmiller Photography

“The environment, after all, is where we all meet, where we all have a mutual interest. It is one thing that all of us share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become.”

Lady Bird Johnson, who helped establish our national parks.

The images here are inspired by Nature around the world and around the corner.  My intent is to show the great variety and ever-changing moods of our environment with the hope that others will be moved to protect and preserve it. If people appear in my images, it’s usually to give perspective to our place within Nature and our surroundings.

A photograph is a microsecond in time, but I try to capture enduring images—a serendipitous moment, a moody landscape, special light – and to share those moments with you.

I was a reluctant convert to a digital camera, and many of my favorite shots were captured on film. I rarely use a tripod or artificial lighting, never AI, and I use some digital photo editing sparingly mainly to provide the shared experience of “being there”.

Nature never goes out of style and speaks for itself. So, I endeavor to offer images that speak for themselves and to you.

Also displayed on this site a selection of artwork from years past, returning to my roots as a freehand artist, as well as current, ongoing work. Please visit "Drawings and Paintings" which represents a continuing creative practice alongside my photography.

“Out of the Clear Blue Sky”

Oil on canvas, 12”x18”

Out of the Clear Blue Sky was inspired by the dramatic storms that arise almost without warning in the Tucson Sonoran Desert. This painting is a composite of moments I've witnessed- a rain shaft collapsing from a clear sky, crisp moon overhead, lightning striking distant mountains, glowing dusk, and desert plants illuminated in a water reflection. As urban development pushes farther into fragile desert habitat, these scenes are becoming increasingly precious. As drought and development spread and reshape the land, such scenes are both extraordinary and endangered. This painting depicts the desert's resilience and the need to protect the natural ecosystems that sustain it.
